PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island leaders are hailing the newly announced “Superman” building deal as a win for affordable housing, with one in five of the project’s planned apartments restricted by income.
But whether those units are truly “affordable” could be in the eye of the beholder…
Despite unprecedented federal dollars, housing advocates say R.I. still isn’t designating enough funds to build, preserve units.
Advocates asked the state to invest $500m in ARPA funds, including $350m just for the development of new and preservation of existing homes. Instead, only $90m has been dedicated to development so far.

PROVIDENCE, RI – According to a survey of Rhode Island non-profit housing developers, over 1,900 affordable homes could be developed within the next three years in 18 communities if the necessary resources are allocated. The Housing Network of Rhode Island (HNRI) recently surveyed its 17 member organizations to forecast their affordable home development plans through 2026. HNRI is the state association of non-profit affordable housing developers and exists to support the work of its members, and to promote public awareness and policies that address Rhode Island’s housing and community economic needs. HNRI members have developed thousands of affordable homes and initiated numerous community revitalization efforts across our State.

The Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless hosted its Annual Awards Breakfast Monday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Three hundred people attended, including Attorney General Peter Neronha, Mayor of Warwick Joseph Solomon, Mayor of Providence Jorge Elorza, members of the General Assembly and Providence City Council, service providers, activists, and community members.
